The disc is a small cartilage pad that is situated between spinal bones. The soft jellylike centre is contained by layers of fibrous tissues. Each disc serves as a connector, spacer, and shock absorber for the spine. When healthy, discs allow normal turning and bending.

Since spinal discs have a very poor blood supply, they depend upon the circulation of joint fluids to bring in nutrients and expel waste. If a spinal joint loses its normal motion and this pumping action is impaired, the health of the disc deteriorates. Like a wet sponge, a healthy disc is flexible. A dry sponge is hard, stiff, and can crack easily. This is how many disc problems begin.

Because of the way each disc is attached to the vertebra above and below it, a disc cannot “slip” as commonly thought. However, trauma or injury to the spine can cause discs to bulge, herniated, or worse, rupture. This can be quite painful, putting pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots, interfering with their function.

The chiropractic approach here at Green Point chiropractic centre to disc problems is to help restore better motion and position to the spinal joint. Besides reducing disc bulging, better spinal function helps reduce inflammation and begin the slow process of healing the surrounding soft tissues.

Many patients have avoided needless surgery or a dependency on pain pills, by choosing conservative chiropractic care, here in our clinic at Adelphi Centre, Sea Point.

Pain has a purpose, it is a warning signal, telling you something is wrong. We often equate pain with disease instead of seeing it as the body’s early warning system, calling attention to potential problems. Every time you overdo, there’s a small amount of damage done to your spine. Vertebrae can slip out of position or move improperly as muscles pull. In a few days the muscles heal, the pain goes away, and the vertebrae stay out of place, creating a chronic vertebral subluxation. This causes pressure on nerves and can lead to fixation of two or more vertebrae. When vertebrae are fixated, the fluid in the disc is forced out, causing the disc to dry out and wear down prematurely. Eventually the joints degenerate into a condition called degenerative joint disease. You may know this as arthritis. So all of a sudden, you bend, twist or lift, just like you’ve done a hundred times before, and oops, your back goes our “all by itself”.

Regular chiropractic care at Green Point chiropractic centre, The Equinox in Sea Point, can help take care of the small, unfelt subluxations before neglect turns them into major disasters.

The sacroiliac joint is a large joint located where the lowest bone in the spine (the sacrum) attaches to the pelvis (the ilium). There are two sacroiliac joints, one lying on either side of the centre of the lower back. The sacroiliac joint may well be the most overlooked cause of low back pain. Sacroiliac syndrome is one of the most common causes of low back pain, both during pregnancy and following delivery because of the stress on the joint during these times. Chiropractic care is very promising for the treatment of this disorder.
